MyD: an indoor ride game

In progress
A game layer for group indoor-cycling classes: live races, fair scoring across bikes and a season-long league.

A group indoor-cycling class has a room full of riders and bikes that measure power, but everyone rides alone. MyD is a game layer on top of the class: it runs on the riders’ phones and on a shared screen in the studio, reads the bikes directly over ANT+ and Bluetooth, and works alongside the bikes’ own software, not instead of it.

Approach

  • Fair numbers first. Two bikes of the same model report different power for the same effort, so raw watts cannot decide a race. MyD levels the bikes before it scores anything.
  • Races for everyone. Power races on levelled watts and weight, handicap races against your own recent form, and raw races just for fun.
  • Five awards per class (power, sync, improvement, consistency and effort), so five different people win every night.
  • Teams and a league that runs through the year like a Grand Tour.

Status

MyD is at the design stage. Its first piece, Torch, is already live: it guides one rider through a workout on one bike.
